Robert Farquhar Remembered at the ISSFD

The ISSFD was saddened by the passing of Robert Farquhar on October 18, 2015.  Bob was a pioneer in flight dynamics and laid the foundation for much of research and operations that the ISSFD community regularly presents and shares and a friend to the ISSFD.  His accomplishments included:

NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre – 1969-1990

- Championed the use of Libration Point Orbits
-
Flight dynamics lead for ISEE-3, 1st spacecraft to assume motion about the SEM L1
- Re-purposed ISEE-3 to ICE for flyby of comet Giacobini-Zinner

John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory – 1990-2007

- Significant contributions to NEAR which was the 1st spacecraft to orbit and land on an asteroid
- Mission director for MESSENGER and New Horizons

In memory of Bob, the ISSFD has dedicated the Interplanetary Mission Design Session (Session 16) to him.
